Hamas was formed in late 1987 at the beginning of the first Palestinian intifada (uprising). It has its roots in the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and is supported by a strong socio-political structure within the Palestinian territories. The group’s charter calls for the establishment of an Islamic Palestinian state in place of Israel and rejects all agreements made between the PLO and Israel. Hamas’s strength is concentrated in the Gaza Strip and West Bank areas.
Hamas has a military wing known as the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades which has carried out numerous anti-Israel attacks in Israel and the Palestinian territories since the 1990s. These attacks include large-scale bombings, small-arms attacks, improvised roadside explosives, and rocket attacks on Israeli civilian targets.
